Dornoch is known in the Scottish Highlands as the place with the Big Sky. Quite why I’m not sure. It must be something to do with the fact we’re inland, at least by a bit and not directly on the North Sea Coast. And also we’re far enough away from the hills for them to be a backdrop rather than dominant feature.
Either way, at Dornoch we have the Big Sky, as the picture shows.
There’s a reason I take so many pictures from the Dornoch beach here. The views are simply stunning. So much so that a relatively serious photographer like me gets overwhelmed by the sight to the point where the rules go by the board. I just want to capture the moment.
This picture comes from one of those moments.
Actually I was on the beach filming the Kitesurfers when this rainbow appeared somewhere over Helmsdale. My picture doesn’t do the real scene justice because it can’t capture the joy of these teenagers having a ball fooling around on the rocks while others are Kite surfing. Another group was playing cricket while yet another was playing Rounders.
But for photographers there’s a special note.
I was at least half a mile away from the kids on the rocks while the rainbow was probably 30 miles to the north.
In the middle of shooting video of the Kitesurfing I snapped this scene.
My Panasonic HDC-SD600 copes with anything I throw at it while my preference would be taking in the scene and forgetting the picture.
The reason I take so many pictures on the beach is I spend so much time there, and see so many wonderful sights.
Why do I spend so much time there?
Walking Bennie the Bouvier every morning is one reason, but there are other places to walk. The scenes we get down there, and the feeling of connection with everything thats wonderful about nature would take me there, even if we didn’t have a dog who thinks he owns the beach.
