Discovering KiteSurfing on Dornoch Beach

in Beaches, Dornoch

Kitesurfing is at its best on Dornoch Beach, in the Highlands of Scotland. At least, according to the young man I spoke to about it yesterday.

The combination of minimal waves, shallow water and huge expanse of sand work well for novices and experts alike.

A major advantage is the huge expanse of water in the Dornoch Firth. It’s mostly protected from the North Sea, which can be very angry at times.

The length of the beach allows Kitesurfers to speed across the water long distances before the need to turn around. Best of all is the shallow water. Normally Kitesurfing in an off-shore wind is dangerous. They can get blown out to sea, which wouldn’t be fun. But here the water is shallow for a long way out. Anybody who loses control can just drop the kite and stand on the bottom.

So here they can sail when the wind is on-shore and off-shore. As long as there’s wind they can sail, regardless of direction.

Add to that the car park is less than 100 yards from where they can sail and, usually, the absence of paddlers. It all adds up to seventh heaven for people who just want to have fun on their boards with kites.
