Carnegie Shield Week Prize Giving

At Royal Dornoch Golf Club the golfing season culminates with Carnegie Shield week and that builds up to the prize giving on Saturday afternoon. This is Highlands golf at it’s best.

There’s always a good crowd. Both local members and visitors have spent the afternoon on the course watching the three match play finals. Those will affiliations will have watched the supporting events but the majority will have followed the two best players of the week contest for the ultimate prize – the Carnegie Shield.

The prize giving takes place at the front of the clubhouse, on what used to be the putting green and beside the 1st tee for the ladies.

This year the weather was especially kind, to welcome the new captain. Hamish Macrae had been confirmed as Captain for the next two years at the AGM held the previous evening. Club Secretary Mike Thomas introduced the new Captain to the crowd, and asked Eileen Macrae to present the prizes.

Naturally the prize giving concludes with the presentation of the Carnegie Shield to the winner, who is then invited to make a speech.

This year local heroes Christopher “Chippy” Mailey and Alexander Macdonald contested the first “all local” final in many years Watch them play the first hole.

Both weather and golf course were in the finest of conditions but the golfing gods deserted defending champion Mailey and Macdonald ran out the comfortable winner.

In his valedictory speech Macdonald graciously, in the true spirit of golf, acknowledged the misfortune suffered by Mailey and the generosity of 3 time winner Biggadike who he’d conquered on the last hole in the semi final earlier in the day.

These videos of proceedings may be a little long for some – we’ve posted a shorter version elsewhere. But for the people involved and those that know them, this version is a record of the whole event.
