Panasonic HDC-SD600 CamCorder User Report

The Panasonic HDC-SD600 Camcorder turns out to be everything I could have hoped for, and a lot more besides.  I’ve now been using it for a week but haven’t got anywhere near understanding the full range of what it’ll do.  I’ve made lots of videos and taken quite a few stills.

This camera is just awesome.

Last year I bought a Sony Camcorder with the best of intentions.  I was going to dive into video content. The trouble was that camera turned out not to be good enough, as to be honest I suspected when buying it.  It wasn’t HD.

So It didn’t get used very much.  That’s probably why the accident happened.  Something in the back of my mind was looking for an excuse to replace it with the real thing.  I didn’t deliberately drop it in the toilet – promise.  But that’s where it ended up.

So my search for a new one started but didn’t take very long.  The user reporting the SD600 on Amazon said just the right things to get me hooked. After that it was just a case of persuading myself to spend the money.

Back in the 70′s and early 80′s photography was quite a passion for me.  So much so the run of the mill SLRs like Nikon and Canon couldn’t do what I wanted.  I had to have a Bronica – a 6 X 4  SLR with Eye level viewfinder and exposure meter.  With the lens extension on the total weighed a lot more than I wanted to carry around, but it took the most awesome pictures.

In 30 years no camera has got close to replacing that Bronica in my affections – until now that is.  The Panasonic is that good.

I’ll leave you enthusiasts to look up the spec but here’s a little taster:

  1. Ultra high quality Leica lens captures pin sharp images.
  2. 14.2 Mega Pixels recording compliments that lens with a file the size of a suitcase.
  3. Optical Image Stabiliser completely abolishes shake – no matter how clumsy the photographer.
  4. 3MOS Sensors get to the very heart of focus and exposure while the photographer does precisely nothing.  The colours are just gorgeous in both stills and video.

Here are two examples of what the camera can do even in the hands of a rank amateur fooling around like me.

Maybe I should take this stuff more seriously.
