Royal Dornoch Ladies Open Championship

Ladies golf is a big part of the Royal Dornoch Golf Club schedule. Open competitions bring visitors from far and wide, and especially the Ladies Open Championship.  With Joyce Wethered as a past winner the competition has an attraction beyond the fun day out.

Not surprising really. This gem of a golf course is at its best this time of year and usually the weather smiles on the fairer sex. This year was no exception.

The course is in magnificent condition, ready for the Carnegie Shield which starts on Saturday. The greens staff has been working for months making sure the links land is the best it can be for these major competitions.

The purists might suggest there’s too much grass. The course isn’t hard and running, the way it should be. But we’ve had rain recently so the greens are soft(ish) and lies on the fairway are on grass instead of the usual sand.

That will change for next week. The sun will shine and the wind will blow. Come Shield time it’ll be frightening. The ball won’t stop where it lands and competitors will need to play proper golf.

Meantime, as the video shows, there’s grass on the ground, the sun is shining, and there’s no wind.

And the ladies are having a ball.

Watch the movie and see Royal Dornoch at (close to) its best.
