Paradise on the 58th Parallel

People come to Dornoch from all over the world. It’s Paradise on the 58th Parallel untroubled by the world’s problems. It’s Nirvana for anybody wanting peace and quiet, away from the hassle, the crime, the pollution, the stresses of modern living.

Those who know it make their own way here. Flights to Inverness and an hour in the car, or maybe to Edinburgh or Glasgow with a 4 hour drive through the mountains. Maybe even the 600 mile endurance rally from London. Return visitors rent houses or go back to their favourite Bed and Breakfast guest houses.

Others come for the first time, on coach tours, or golfing tours, or even from cruise ships. They don’t stay for long but some return, captivated by the big sky, the beaches, the golf courses and by the people.

There’s no pressure in Dornoch.

The weather isn’t great until compared with New York or Chicago or thousands of other places. Rarely are temperatures below freezing all day and in the summer low 70s is the usual. The mountains keep rainfall well below average.

The sun doesn’t always shine. When it does the magic jumps out. The scenery is heart stoppingly beautiful with the sky and the hills and the beaches and the sea.

If Dornoch were on the South Coast of England only millionaires would live there, in gated communities.

But then it wouldn’t be Dornoch, would it.
